In this paper, the connection between the spectrum of selfadjoint ordinary differential operators with arbitrary deficiency index \(d\) and the number of linearly independent square-integrable solutions for real values of the spectral parameter \(\lambda \) is investigated. Based on a new characterization of selfadjoint domains and on the limit-point (LP) and limit-circle (LC) solutions established in an earlier paper, the authors show that there is no continuous spectrum in \(I\) if there are \(d\) linearly independent square-integrable solutions for all \(\lambda \) in an open interval \(I\). The results proposed in this paper are new and extend, improve and unify the corresponding results in this field.
