This paper is concerned with the construction and stability of high frequency geometric optics expansion solutions to the linear hyperbolic IBVP; it studies the case when a strong stability condition breaks down in the hyperbolic region. It makes precise the optical loss of regularity for problems which do not satisfy the strong stability condition by showing that losses of derivatives must occur from the source terms to the solution. It also shows that the speed of propagation for some problems may be larger than the speed of propagation in free space. It is argued that the regularity assumption cannot be weakened by assuming that the lower order terms are only bounded.
