We have at hand a detailed review of the density-matrix renormalization group method (DMRG) revisited in terms of matrix product states (MPS), what allows us to get more insight in the practical implementation of the family of DMRG algorithms which we presently have at hand. The paper is restricted to the framework of one-dimensional physics. One first bears in mind the essential of DMRG as it appeared at the beginning in the literature (without referring to matrix product), and then it is shown that any quantum state can be written exactly in a very specific form which is given by these matrix product states. One examines successively the relation between DMRG and entanglement, matrix products, matrix product operators, ground calculation with MPS, time evolution with MPS, time-dependent simulation, DMRG and N(numerical)RG, infinite-size algorithms. The author claims that despite that DMRG is by-now a well established topic, there is still room for further improvements.
