Summary: We consider the number \(\sigma (w)\) of positions that do not start a square in binary words w. Letting \(\sigma (n)\) denote the maximum of \(\sigma (w)\) for length \(|w| = n\), we show that lim \(\sigma (n)/n = 15/31\).
