Let \(a\) be positive integer. The authors prove that the Diophantine equation \(X^2 - (1+a^2)Y^4 = -2a\) has at most \(3\) positive integer solutions \((X,Y)\). The proof is based on effective algebraic approximations of quartic algebraic numbers (see also the first author [Sci. China, Ser. A 40, No. 10, 1045--1051 (1997; Zbl 0908.11027); J. Number Theory 102, No. 1, 1--10 (2003; Zbl 1095.11037)]).
