In [J. Am. Math. Soc. 22, No. 1, 77--117 (2009; Zbl 1206.37026)], \textit{J. Hubbard, D. Schleicher} and \textit{M. Shishikura} gave a thick-thin decomposition of a Riemann surface \(X\) of finite type with an integrable quadratic differential. Let \(L\subset X\) be a geodesic and \(I\subset L\) be a segment of length \(l\). \(I\) can also be viewed as a segment in the universal covering space (which is the hyperbolic disk \(\mathbb{D}=\{z\in \mathbb{C}:|z|<1\}\)). In \(\mathbb{D}\), we draw perpendiculars through the endpoints of \(I\), both on the same side of \(L\); extend the two perpendicular lines until they meet the circle at infinity, and finally join the points at infinity by a geodesic line \(M\). We define \(\eta(l)\) to be the distance between \(L\) and \(M\). Let \(l^*\) be a fixed constant. For any simple closed geodesic \(\gamma\) with length \(l(\gamma)<l^*\), it is easy to show that the set of points at distance \(< \eta\big(l(\gamma)\big)\) from \(\gamma\) is an embedded annulus \(A_{\gamma}\). Let \(A_{\gamma}^0\) be the subannulus of \(A_{\gamma}\) of modulus mod\((A_{\gamma})-\sqrt{\text{mod}(A_{\gamma})}\) with central curve \(\gamma\). The two components of \(A_{\gamma}\backslash A_{\gamma}^0\) are denoted by \(A_{\gamma}^+\) and \(A_{\gamma}^-\), respectively. For any \(\delta\in (0,l^*)\), the \(\delta\)-decomposition of \(X\) (if exists) is written as \[ X=\bigg( \bigcup_{i\in I} A_i^0 \bigg)\cup \bigg(\bigcup_{j\in J} Y_j \bigg), \] where the \(\gamma_i\) are disjoint simple closed geodesics of length \(l(\gamma_i)<\delta\), the \(A_i^0\) are the central collars around \(\gamma_i\), and the \(Y_j\) are the components of \(X\backslash \bigcup_i A_i^0\). Let \(Q(X)\) denote the space of integrable holomorphic quadratic differentials on \(X\). For any measurable subset \(Y\subset X\) and \(q\in Q(X)\), the norm of \(q\) on \(Y\) is defined as \[ \|q\|_Y=\int_Y|q|. \] Theorem. (Hubbard-Schleicher-Shishikura [loc. cit.]) For any \(\varepsilon >0\), there is a universal constant \(\delta>0\) with the following property: if \(X\) is a hyperbolic Riemann surface of finite type, \(0<\delta<\delta_0\) and \[ X=\bigg( \bigcup_{i\in I} A_i^0 \bigg)\cup \bigg(\bigcup_{j\in J} Y_j \bigg) \] is the \(\delta\)-decomposition of \(X\), then every \(q\in Q(X)\) can be written as \[ q=\sum_{i\in I}q^{}_{A_i}+\sum_{j\in J}q^{}_{Y_j} \] with \(\#I<\infty\) and \(\#J<\infty\), and all \(q^{}_{A_i},q^{}_{Y_j}\in Q(X)\), adapted to the decomposition of \(X\) so that \[ \sum_i\left( \|q-q_{A_i}\|_{A_i^0} + \|q_{A_i}\|_{X\backslash A_i^0} \right)+ \sum_j\left( \|q-q_{Y_j}\|_{Y_j} + \|q_{Y_j}\|_{X\backslash Y_j} \right) \leq \varepsilon \|q\|_{\cup A_i}. \] In this paper, the author generalizes the above theorem to the case when \(X\) is of infinite type.
