This paper derives an asymptotic expansion for \(\log n!\) in terms of decreasing powers of \(n(n+1)/2\) by elementary arguments. Numerical comparison is given between the author's expansion and two others, one being Stirling's original formula (in decreasing powers of \(n+\frac12\)) and the other the usual expansion in terms of decreasing powers of \(n\) (which is attributed to de Moivre).
