The authors give an entirely elementary proof of Gapser's proof on the Markov sequence problem for Jacobi polynomials. The proof is based on the spectral analysis of an operator that arises in the study of a probabilistic model of colliding molecules introduced by Kac. The proof of this paper also allows the authors to obtain bounds on the sizes of extreme eigenvalues.
