Starting from the classical Sommerfeld half-plane problem [\textit{F.-O. Speck}, Proc. R. Soc. Edinb. Sect. A 104, 261--277 (1986; Zbl 0626.35020); \textit{E. Meister} and \textit{F.-O. Speck}, Appl. Math. 22, 193--211 (1986; Zbl 0569.35018)], the authors formulate a general boundary-transmission value problem for the diffraction of a plane wave by a junction of two half-planes in the setting of a locally finite energy norm. The problem consists of the Helmholtz equation and very general boundary-transmission conditions. Using an operator theoretic approach, the equivalence of the problem to classes of Wiener-Hopf operators (WHOs) is presented that are often associated to ill-posed problems, i.e., the corresponding operators are not normally solvable. The main aim of the paper consists in the development of a method (the so-called image normalization method) for a junction of two half-planes that normalizes the WHOs, and thus yields the image normalization of the operators. The method is summarized representing the central ideas of [\textit{A. Moura Santos, F.-O. Speck} and \textit{F. S. Teixeira}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 225, No. 2, 501--531 (1998; Zbl 0915.47020)] (without proofs) that consist in the maintenance of a space of the locally finite energy and changing the image space only in a minimal way. Then several special cases with different boundary-transmission conditions, such as conditions of higher order with a significant interest in applications, boundary-transmission problems of pairwise normal type, and problems with oblique derivatives, are treated. The corresponding necessary and sufficient conditions that hold for the operators and the equivalent WHOs are formulated in theorems including proofs.
