In the present paper, the authors study the existence of incompressible embeddings of surfaces into a certain boundary reducible 3-manifold. First it is shown that for every compact surface with boundary, orientable or not, there is an incompressible embedding of the surface into a handlebody of genus greater than or equal to two, which is a natural generalization of the results in [\textit{W. Jaco}, Lectures on three-manifold topology. Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences. Regional Conference Series in Mathematics, 43. Providence, R.I.: American Mathematical Society (AMS). (1980; Zbl 0433.57001)], \textit{M. Eduave-Muñoz} [Topology Appl. 98, No.~1--3, 167--189 (1999; Zbl 0934.57012)], \textit{H. N. Howards} [ibid. 158, No.~3, 325--343 (2011; Zbl 1220.57011)] and \textit{R. Qiu} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 128, No.~10, 3091--3097 (2000; Zbl 0965.57014)]. The authors then give a further extension proving that there are similar incompressible embeddings into a 3-manifold with a compressible boundary component of genus two or greater.
