The authors investigate the following three problems: (1) a nonlinear Schrödinger equation arising in the mean field description of dipolar quantum gases, (2) the existence of standing waves, and (3) the possible existence of solitary waves in Bose-Einstein condensates by the Fourier transform based on the paper of \textit{M. I. Weinstein} [Commun. Math. Phys. 87, 567--576 (1983; Zbl 0527.35023)].
