The authors introduce the notion of weakly Zamfirescu mapping (by combining the concepts of Zamfirescu mapping and weakly contractive mapping in Dugundji-Granas' sense) and prove that in a complete metric space \((X,d)\) any weakly Zamfirescu mapping \(f:X\to X\) is a Picard operator (i.e., \(f\) has a unique fixed point \(x^*\in X\) and the sequence of successive approximations of \(f\) starting from any element \(x_0\in X\) converges to \(x^*\)). A local fixed point result and a continuation theorem for this mapping are given. Several very interesting examples are also included.
