This paper is a contribution to the classification of finite-dimensional pointed Hopf algebras over the field of complex numbers. Specifically, it concerns the case where the group \(G\) of group-like elements is isomorphic to a sporadic simple group. It is shown that such pointed Hopf algebra is isomorphic to a group algebra, except when \(G\) is the Fischer group \(Fi_{22}\), the Baby Monster and the Monster. For these last three groups, a list of irreducible modules for which the corresponding Nichols algebra is not known to be finite-dimensional is given. The proof of the main results is based on reductions to questions about conjugacy classes in finite groups, which are solved with the help of GAP. Details on the implementation of the algorithms used in the proofs are given in the separate paper [J. Algebra 325, No. 1, 282-304 (2011; Zbl 1217.16025)].
