Let \(L\) be a finite dimensional nilpotent Lie algebra of dimension \(n\) and let \(M(L)\) be the Schur multiplier of \(L\). It is known that \(\dim M(L)= \tfrac12 n(n-1)-t(L)\) which is much like a result for the Schur multiplier of \(p\)-groups. The Lie algebras with \(t(L)\leq 8\) have been classified, see [\textit{P. Hardy}, Commun. Algebra 33, No. 11, 4205--4210 (2005; Zbl 1099.17007)]. The author considers a new invariant for \(M(L)\), \(\dim M(L) =\tfrac12 (n-1)(n-2) +1 -s(L)\). The author uses \(s(L)\) to give short proofs of the classification of algebras with \(t(L)\leq 4\) and classifies those with \(s(L)\leq 2\).
