Let \(f\) be a self-map on a compact Riemannian manifold \(M\) which is \(C^{1+\beta}\) outside some set which may contain critical or singular points. Suppose that \(f\) preserves an ergodic Borel probability measure \(\mu\) which admits only positive finite Lyapunov exponents uniformly bounded from below by some positive constant. Suppose further that \(f\) has positive entropy with respect to \(\mu\), the positive logarithm of its derivative and that of the reciprocal of its derivative are \(\mu\)-integrable, and that one has a certain control on its Hoelderness close to singular points. Then the author shows that \(f\) can be gradually approximated by uniformly expanding repellers, which is to be understood as approximation in terms of various dynamical quantities (e.g., topological entropy, topological pressure, Lyapunov exponents) under restriction to compact \(f\)-invariant subsets.
