Let \(S\) be a smooth minimal compact projective surface of maximal Albanese dimension. It is well known that the Severi inequality \[ K_S^2\geq 4\chi(S) \] holds. A conjecture of \textit{M. Manetti} [Math. Nachr. 261-262, 105--122 (2003; Zbl 1044.14017)] affirmes the stronger inequality \[ K_S^2\geq 4\chi (S)+4q(S)-12 \] holds. The result of the paper is a step towards the proof of the conjecture. In particular the two authors show that, if \(S\) is of maximal Albanese dimension and \(q(S)\geq 5\), then we have the inequalities \[ K_S^2\geq 4\chi(S)+4q-17 \] and \[ K_S^2\geq 6\chi(S)+6q-20 \] the first holding when the canonical map of \(S\) is not birational and the second when it has degree 2 and \(S\) has no irrational pencil respectively. Moreover stronger inequalities can be proved under extra assumptions on the Albanese map.
