      Regularity properties of the solution \(f : X \rightarrow Z\) of the general explicit functional equation \[ f(x) = h(x, y, f(g_1(x,y)), \dots, f(g_n(x,y))), \] where \((x,y)\in D \subset X \times Y\subset \mathbb R^r \times \mathbb R^s\), \(x\in X \subset \mathbb R^r\), \(y\in Y \subset \mathbb R^s\), \(g_j : D \to X\) \((j=1, \cdots, n)\), \(h: D \times Z^n \rightarrow Z \subset \mathbb R^m\) are given functions and the sets \(D\), \(X\) and \(Y\) are open, have been investigated by \textit{A. Járai} [Regularity properties of functional equations in several variables. Advances in Mathematics (Springer) 8. New York, NY: Springer (2005; Zbl 1081.39022)]. \textit{M. A. McKiernan} [Aequationes Math. 4, 31--36 (1970; Zbl 0195.39602)] considered the mean value equation \[ f(x) = \sum_{j=1}^n \mu_j f(x+y e_j), \quad x \in \mathbb R^r,\;y \in \mathbb R, \] where \(\mu_j \in \mathbb R\) and \(e_j \in \mathbb R^r\) are fixed, and \textit{H. Światak} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 221, 97--118 (1976; Zbl 0333.39004)] considered the generalized mean value equations \[ \begin{aligned} & \sum_{j=1}^n h_j f(x+g_j(y))= f(x),\quad x \in \mathbb R^r,\;y \in Y \subset \mathbb R^s, \\ &\sum_{j=1}^n h_j(x,y) f(x+g_j(y)) = h_0(x, y),\quad x \in \mathbb R^r,\;y \in Y \subset \mathbb R^s, \\ & \sum_{j=1}^n h_j(x,y) f(g_j(x,y)) = h_0(x, y),\quad x \in \mathbb R^r,\;y \in Y \subset \mathbb R^s.\end{aligned} \] The author introduces two methods to prove regularity properties of the linear functional equation \[ f(x) = h_0(x, y) + \sum_{j=1}^n h_j(x, y) f(x + g_j (y)), \] where \((x,y) \in D \subset \mathbb R^r \times \mathbb R^s\), \(x\in \mathbb R^r\) and \(y \in \mathbb R^s\), with few parameters \(1\leq s< r\), and proves that they are equivalent under certain conditions.
