The equation \[ q_t+6qq_x+q_{xxx}+3\sigma \partial^{-1}_x q_{yy}=0,\quad \sigma=\pm 1,\quad \partial^{-1}_xf(x)=\int_{-\infty}^x f(\xi)d\xi \tag{1} \] is an integrable nonlinear PDE evolution equation in two spatial dimensions as the natural generalization of KdV equation. It arises in the study of waves of long wavelength in shallow water and also in many physical problems. The authors suggest for its investigation the novel approach used by the second author for the study of the Davey-Stewartson equation [\textit{A. S. Fokas}, Commun. Math. Phys. 289, No.~3, 957--993 (2009; Zbl 1172.35075)] consisting in the development of the ``\(d\)-bar formalism'' and the ``global relation'', which involve here a function in the complex plane, discontinuous across the real axis. This methodology is employed in order to analyze the KPII for \(y\) on the half-plane \(\{-\infty <x<\infty\), \(y>0\}\) and then to study a similar problem for \(x\) on the half-plane, which corresponds to a wavemaker at \(\{x=0\), \(-\infty <y<\infty\}\). Here, the solving of the linearized version of the given nonlinear PDE via a Lax pair approach provides the useful starting point before analyzing the nonlinear PDE itself.
