The author presents a very careful investigation of the mathematical etymology of the phrase ``local-global''. It first appeared at the end of the 19th century in areas related to complex analysis, the calculus of variations, and differential geometry. The occurrence of the phrase in number theory (starting with Hasse's dissertation, but becoming explicit only with the emergence of local class field theory in the 1930s) is mentioned, but not studied since ``the first twenty years'' roughly cover the period from 1898 until 1918.
