The authors are concerned with the existence of weak solutions for the quasilinear elliptic problem \(-\Delta u+a(x)u-\Delta(|u|^{\alpha})|u|^{\alpha-2} u=h(u)\) in the whole \(\mathbb R^N\), \(\alpha>1\), \(n\geq 1\). The potential \(a(x)\) is assumed to be bounded from below by a positive constant; it has a finite limit at infinity and is invariant under a finite group action. The arguments employed by the authors are variational and rely on the dual approach introduced by \textit{M. Colin} and \textit{L. Jeanjean} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl., Ser. A, Theory Methods 56, No.~2, A, 213--226 (2004; Zbl 1035.35038)]. More precisely, it is shown that for some suitable function \(f(v)\) (that depends on \(\alpha>1\)) any solution of \(-\Delta v+a(x) f(v)f'(v)=h(f(v))f'(v)\) in \(\mathbb R^N\) provides a solution of the initial problem. By means of mountain pass geometry the authors establish the existence of a solution to the dual problem satisfying various analytic properties.
