This paper is concerned with the stability and Hopf bifurcation in a bidirectional ring network model described by the 3-dimensional delay differential system: \[ \begin{aligned} & x'(t) = - x(t) + \alpha f(y(t-\tau)) + \beta f(z(t-\tau)),\\ & y'(t)=-y(t)+\alpha f(z(t-\tau))+\beta f(x(t-\tau)),\\ & z'(t)=-z(t)+\alpha f(x(t-\tau))+\beta f(y(t-\tau)),\end{aligned}\tag{1} \] where \(\tau\) is the nonnegative synaptic transmission delay, \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\) are the self and the nearest-neighbour couplings and the real function \( f\) is the activation function that satisfies \(f(0)=0\), \(f'(0)=1\), \(xf(x) \neq 0\) for all \(x\neq 0\). In section 2, the linear stability of the trivial solution of (1) is studied giving necessary and sufficient conditions on \( \alpha\) and \( \beta\) that ensure the stability of this solution. In section 3, Hopf bifurcation is studied in terms of a given function that depends on the parameters of the system. Finally, the results of some numerical experiments with \( f(x)=\tanh(x)\) are presented to confirm the theoretical results of the above sections.
