This paper is a study of existence of solutions to the eigenvalue problem \(-\Delta_{g}w+\alpha(\sigma)w=\lambda K(\sigma)f(w),\) where \((M,g)\) is a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary of dimension \(d\geq 3\), \(\Delta_{g}\) is the Laplace-Beltrami operator on \(M\), \(\sigma \in M,w\in H_{1}^{2}(M),\) \(\lambda\in \mathbb R^{+}\), \(\alpha \) and \(K\) are positive functions in \(C^{\infty }(M),\) and \(f:\mathbb R\to \mathbb R\) is a locally Hölder continuous function satisfying \(\lim_{|t|\to\infty} \frac{f(t)}{t}=0\). The authors use variational methods to find a well determined interval of the parameter \(\lambda \) such that the equation admits at least three nontrivial solutions in \(H_{1}^{2}(M)\) They then apply this multiplicity result to solving nonlinear eigenvalue problems on the unit sphere \(S^{d}\) and to existence of solutions for Emden-Fowler equations.
