The main result of the note under review is that surjective analytic maps between compact bordered Riemann surfaces map boundaries to boundaries. This complements the open mapping theorem which states that interior points are mapped to interior points. It is also noted that the main result allows one to replace the `boundary-preservation' assumption in the Riemann-Hurwitz formula for analytic maps by the simpler assumption of surjectivity.
