The paper presents a class of low pass filter functions in the context of large eddy simulation of turbulent flows where only the large scale motion is computed while the influence of the subgrid scales is modeled. It is shown that for the proposed filters multiple successive application using even different filter widths is equivalent to a single application with an extended or equal filter width. Approximate deconvolution models require the computation of the inverse of the filter and typically multiple application of the filter is required to compute an approximation of the inverse. Hence such concatenating filters become attractive and may be numerically efficient, in particular for unstructured grids. General commutation properties of the filter functions are also discussed. Examples for such filters are the classical spectral cut off and Gaussian filters.
