The paper deals with the fourth-order differential equation \[ u^{iv}+\alpha u''+\beta u=\lambda f(x,u)+\mu g(x,u) \] with the Dirichlet conditions \[ u(0)=u(1)=0,\;u''(0)=u''(1)=0, \] where \(\alpha\), \(\beta\) are real constants ensuring that the linear part is positive, and \(f\), \(g\) are \(L^2\) Carathéodory functions. Under some conditions, there are solutions for \(\lambda\) in some open interval and \(\mu\) (positive) small. The proof is by variational methods and is based on a result of \textit{B. Ricceri} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl., Ser. A, Theory Methods 70, No.~9, A, 3084--3089 (2009; Zbl 1214.47079)] combined with a result of \textit{G. Bonanno} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl., Ser. A, Theory Methods 54, No.~4, A, 651--665 (2003; Zbl 1031.49006)].
