Let \(g\) be an analytic function on the unit disk \(\mathbb D\) in the complex plane. The generalized Volterra integral operator \(T_ g\) is defined by the formula \( (T_ g f)(z)=\int_0^{z}f(\zeta)g'(\zeta)\,d\zeta \), \(z\in {\mathbb D}\), for functions \(f\) analytic in \(\mathbb D\). There are found two-sided estimates for essential and weak essential norms of \(T_ g\) on the spaces \(H^ p\) and \(BMOA\). For example, for \(g\in BMOA\), \(T_ g:H^ p\rightarrow H^ p\), \(1\leq p<\infty\), the following relation holds: \( \| T_ g\|_ e\simeq \text{dist}(g,VMOA) \). It is proved that on the spaces \(H^1\) and \(BMOA\), the operator \(T_ g\) is weakly compact if and only if it is compact.
