The article introduces the étale envelope \(E_{X/Y}\) for any unramified, not necessarily representable, morphism \(f: X \longrightarrow Y\) of algebraic stacks. The result of the article generalizes the well-known fact that an unramified morphism of schemes \(f: X \longrightarrow Y\) is an étale-local embedding. The étale envelope comes equipped with a canonical étale morphism \(E_{X/Y}\longrightarrow Y\) having \(Y\) as an open section, and where the unramified map \( f: X \longrightarrow Y\) factors via a closed immersion \(X\longrightarrow E_{X/Y}\). Several properties of the étale envelope are established in the paper. One of these properties is that the étale envelope commutes with arbitrary pull-backs \(Y'\longrightarrow Y\). The étale envelope \(E_{X/Y}\) of an étale morphism \(f: X \longrightarrow Y\) is the disjoint union of \(X\) and \(Y\), which is also the situation for the fibers of \(E_{X/Y}\rightarrow Y\). The étale envelope \(E_{X/Y}\) for the normalization of a plane nodal cubic \(f: X \rightarrow Y\), is illustrative and given in the beginning of the article.
