It is known that small deformations of a maximally degenerate complex curve are Schottky uniformized, and they form a Mumford curve over the ring of convergent power series of deformation parameters. The author calls such deformations nearly degenerate Riemann surfaces. The aim of this paper is to study vector bundles of degree 0 on a nearly degenerate Riemann surface \(X\) of genus \(g > 1\) by using linear representations of the Schottky group \(\Gamma_{X}\) which is a free group of rank \(g\) uniformizing \(X\). This approach is different from Narasimhan-Seshardi's theory using unitary representations of the fundamental group of \(X\). The author proves that any semistable vector bundle of degree 0 on \(X\) is associated with a linear representation of \(\Gamma_{X}\) by showing that this bundle is constructed by gluing the trivial bundles on irreducible components of the degenerate curve via constant transition matrices. Therefore, the moduli space \(M^{ss}(X, \mathrm{GL}_{n})\) of linear representations \(\Gamma_{X} \rightarrow \mathrm{GL}_{n}{\mathbb C}\) giving semistable bundles on \(X\) becomes a complex analytic covering of the moduli space of semistable vector bundles of rank \(n\) and degree 0 on \(X\). Theorem 1. Let \(F\) be a semistable bundle of rank \(n\) and degree 0 on a nearly degenerate Riemann surface \(X\). Then \(F\) is constructed by gluing. Corollary. Any semistable bundle of rank \(n\) and degree 0 on a nearly degenerate Riemann surface \(X\) is associated with a linear representation \(\Gamma_{X} \rightarrow \mathrm{GL}_{n}{\mathbb C}\). Furthermore, any stable vector bundle of degree 0 on \(X\) is associated with an irreducible representation \(\Gamma_{X}\). Theorem 2. The covering map \(\psi_{ \mathrm{GL}_{1}} : ({\mathbb C}^{\times})^{g} \rightarrow CL^{0}(X) \cong \mathrm{Pic}^{0}(X)\) is a homomorphism induced from the Abel-Jacobi isomorphism, and its kernel is generated by the multiplicative periods of \(X\).
