Let \(X\) be a smooth complex variety embedded in a projective space. Then the primitive cohomology of \(X\) is (almost by definition using the Lefschetz Hyperplane Section Theorem) the part of the cohomology of \(X\) which may not be determined by a generic hyperplane section \(S=X \cap H\). This paper introduces a new way of determining this primitive cohomology of \(X\) using the whole family of smooth hyperplane sections of \(X\). The key point is a rather general result on the group cohomology of certain representations which should be useful in other situations as well.
