    The paper deals with the decay property of the solution to the Burgers-Poisson equations \(u_{t}+(u^2)_{x}+q_{x}=0\), \(-q_{xx}+q+u_{x}=0\) satisfying the initial data \(u(x,0)=u_0(x)\in L^1(\mathbb {R})\cap H^2(\mathbb {R}).\) If \(E_{s}\equiv \| u\| _{H^{s}}+\| u_0\| _{L^1}\) is suitable small then \[ \| \partial _{x}^{l}(u-v)(\cdot ,t)\| _{H^{s-4-3l}}\leq CE_{s}(1+t)^{-3/4-l/2} \text{ for } 0\leq 3l\leq s-4, \] \[ \| \partial _{x}^{l}(q+v_{x})(\cdot ,t)\| _{H^{s-7-3l}}\leq CE_{s}(1+t)^{-5/4-l/2} \text{ for } 0\leq 3l\leq s-7, \] where \(s\geq 5.\) The author improved the proceeding estimates obtained by \textit{S. Kawashima} [Proc. R. Soc. Edinb., Sect. A 106, 169--194 (1987; Zbl 0653.35066)].
