Let \(T(R)\) denote the (reduced) Teichmüller space of a hyperbolic Riemann surface \(R\). On \(T(R)\) there are two important metrics, one is the Teichmüller metric \(d_T\) defined by means of extremal quasiconformal mappings, the other is the length spectrum metric \(d_L\) defined by means of the hyperbolic lengths of the closed geodesics on \(R\). It is known that \(d_L\leq d_T\). When \(R\) is compact, \textit{Z. Li} [Sci. Sin., Ser. A 29, 265--274 (1986; Zbl 0588.30044)] proved that \(d_T\) and \(d_L\) define the same topology on \(T(R)\). Later, \textit{L. Liu} [Ann. Acad. Sci. Fenn., Math. 24, No. 1, 11--22 (1999; Zbl 0924.32020)] proved that the analogous result holds when \(R\) is topologically finite. When \(R\) is topologically infinite, \textit{H. Shiga} [Ann. Acad. Sci. Fenn., Math. 28, No. 2, 315--326 (2003; Zbl 1040.30025)] proved that \(d_T\) and \(d_L\) may not define the same topology on \(T(R)\). He also gave a sufficient condition for \(d_T\) and \(d_L\) to define the same topology on \(T(R)\). On the other hand, \textit{L. Liu}, \textit{Z. Sun} and \textit{H. Wei} [Ann. Acad. Sci. Fenn., Math. 33, No. 1, 159--170 (2008; Zbl 1147.32014)] gave a sufficient (but not necessary) condition for \(d_T\) and \(d_L\) to define a different topology on \(T(R)\). In this paper, the author proves that Shiga's sufficient condition is not necessary and gives a more general sufficient condition (than that of Liu-Sun-Wei) for \(d_T\) and \(d_L\) to define the different topology on \(T(R)\).
