The author considers hypersurfaces of non-flat complex space forms, which are of Chen 2-type or 3-type. This means that they are provided by immersions with the position vector field decomposable (modulo a constant vector) into a sum of two or three non-constant eigenfunctions of the Laplacian belonging to different eigenspaces. The study is focussed on the particular family of Hopf hypersurfaces. It is shown that 2-type Hopf hypersurfaces have constant mean curvature and a classification theorem is provided. Finally, 3-type Hopf hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature are studied.
