The autor studies the question, when the dynamics of a continuous map \(f: X \to X\) acting on a Cantor set \((X,d)\) can be approximated by the dynamics of a subshift. The main result of the paper can be summarized as follows. If \(f\) is chain mixing and \((\Lambda,\sigma)\) is a two-sided subshift, where \(\Lambda\) is homeomorphic to a Cantor set, then the following conditions are equivalent: {\parindent=6mm \begin{itemize}\item[(1)] If \(\sigma^n\) has a fixed point in \(\Lambda\) for some \(n>0\) then \(f^n\) also has a fixed point; \item[(2)] There exists a sequence of homeomorphisms \(\psi_k : \Lambda \to X\) such that \[ \lim_{k\to \infty} (\sup d((\phi_k \circ \sigma \circ \phi_k^{-1})(x),f(x)))=0, \] that is \(\phi_k \circ \sigma \circ \phi_k^{-1} \to f\) uniformly as \(k\to \infty\). \end{itemize}}
