Let \(M\) be a smooth compact manifold of dimension \(n\) with boundary \(Y\). Let \(E\) be a smooth vector bundle over \(M\). Let \(A\) be an elliptic cone operator on \(E\) of degree \(m>0\). In previous work [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 362, No.~12, 6495--6522 (2010; Zbl 1210.58021)], the authors studied the behavior of the trace of the resolvent of \(A\) as the spectral parameter increases radially. They assumed, in addition to the natural ray conditions on its symbols, that the domain \(D\) of the operator \(A\) was stationary. In this paper that restriction on the domain of the operator is removed -- this involves an analysis of the dynamics of a flow on the Grassmannian of domains. The authors prove the following: Theorem: Let \(\phi\in C^\infty(M; \text{End}(E))\) and let \(\ell\) be an integer with \(ml>n\). Then \[ \text{Tr}(\phi(A_D-\lambda)^{-\ell})\sim\sum_{j=0}^{\infty} r_j(\lambda^{i_{\mu_1}},\dots,\lambda^{i_{\mu_N}},\log(\lambda))\lambda^{\nu_j/m} \] as \(|\lambda|\rightarrow\infty\), where each \(r_j\) is a rational function, where the \(\mu_k\) are real numbers, and where \(\nu_j>\nu_{j+1}\rightarrow-\infty\) as \(j\rightarrow\infty\). One has \(r_j=p_j/q_j\), where \(p_j\) and \(q_j\) are polynomial such that \(q_j(\cdot)\) is uniformly bounded away from zero for large \(\lambda\).
