The main goal of the book is to provide a unified approach to the analysis of singular points, both analytical and numerical, and the subsequent use of the computed data in engineering practice for predicting and eventually preventing failures in structural mechanics. The book is divided into 14 chapters, each containing several sections. Most of them are addressed to two-dimensional problems, where only singular points exist. Three-dimensional problems are discussed, too. A mathematical description of singular solutions in the vicinity of three-dimensional edges is given. Mathematical formulations are treated from an engineering viewpoint. The high-order finite element method is applied to analyze boundary value problems with singularities. Failure criteria based on the generated data are proposed and supported by experimental observations. The book is as much as possible self-contained. Nevertheless, some preliminary knowledge of the finite element method is advised.
