Given \(\alpha >0\) and \(f\in L^{2}\left( 0,1\right) \), the authors are interested in the equation \[ -(x^{2\alpha }u^{\prime }(x))^{\prime }+u\left( x\right) =f\left( x\right) \text{ on }\left( 0,1\right],\;u\left( 1\right) =0. \] They prescribe appropriate (weighted) homogeneous boundary conditions at the origin and prove the existence and uniqueness of \(H_{loc}^{2}(0,1]\) solutions. The authors study the regularity at the origin of such solutions and perform a spectral analysis of the differential operator \({L}u:=-(x^{2\alpha }u^{\prime })^{\prime }+u\) under those appropriate homogeneous boundary conditions.
