The paper is motivated by some results of Mel Henriksen. The author discusses two approaches: ``pure topological'' and ``ring-theoretic'' to some objects in topology. In the first part of the paper the Stone-Čech compactification of a Tychonoff space \(X\) is considered. Three views of \(\beta X\) are here described. In the second part two definitions \(F\)-spaces are presented. The notion of \(F\)-rank is introduced in the last section. The following consequence of CH is proved: ``If a compact space \(X\) of weight \(2^{\omega}\) has finite \(F\)-rank then there is a point \(x\in X\) that has \(F\)-rank 1''.
