A torus manifold, introduced by \textit{A. Hattori} and \textit{M. Masuda} in [Osaka J. Math. 40, No. 1, 1--68 (2003; Zbl 1034.57031)], is an oriented, closed, smooth manifold of dimension \(2n\) with an effective action of a compact torus \(T^n\) having a non-empty fixed point set, which generalizes toric and quasitoric manifolds. By considering \(G\) a compact, connected Lie group with maximal torus \(T^n\), the second author studied the torus manifolds which have extended \(G\)-actions, called torus manifolds with \(G\)-actions and gave a classification of torus manifolds with codimension one extended actions, in [Transform. Groups 16, No. 2, 481--536 (2011; Zbl 1246.57082)]. With results of this paper it is concluded that the set \(\mathfrak{\tilde{M}}\) of simply connected torus manifolds \(M^{2n}\) with \(G\)-actions whose \(G\)-orbits have codimension one principal orbits consists of three types of manifolds. In this very interesting paper, the authors consider a particular case of the family \(\mathfrak{\tilde{M}}\) and give a topological classification and also show that their topological types are completely determined by their cohomology rings and real characteristic classes. We remark that the results of this paper provide a negative answer to the cohomological rigidy problem for the class of torus manifolds whose orbit space is a homotopy cell and also the authors present a sub-class of torus manifolds with codimension one extended actions which are not in the class of toric manifolds but which are classified by their cohomology rings.
