The book presents the theory and applications of an interesting domain in the area of signal science and technology: fractional processes and fractional order signal processing. Its roots lie in the very past: the fractional derivative was proposed 300 years ago and was developed in the 19th century; another line of study began with the appearance of fractals, and the measurements of the levels of the Nile is the origin of the name ``Hurst parameter'', which characterizes a class of phenomena described by fractional order ones. All these facts include the so-called fractionality behavior. Another class of special phenomena that lead to fractionality is constituted by stochastic processes whose decay of the probability density is much slower than that predicted by the Gaussian distribution so that there are only few finite moments. The volume gives answers to several important questions related to fractional systems: how to characterize them; how to measure the degree of fractionality; how to produce (simulate) them and how to process them. Here are the items included in the book (its Contents): Part I. Overview of fractional processes and fractional-order signal processing techniques: 1) Introduction; 2) Overview of fractional processes and fractional-order signal processing techniques. Part II. Fractional processes: 3) Constant-order fractional processes; 4) Multi-fractional processes. Part III: 5) Constant-order fractional signal processing; 6) Variable-order fractional signal processing; 7) Distributed-order fractional signal processing. Part IV. Application of fractional-order signal processing: 8) Fractional autoregressive integrated moving average with stable innovation model of Great Salt Lake elevation time series; 9) Analysis of bio-corrosion electrochemical noise using fractional-order signal processing; 10) Optimal fractional-order damping strategies; 11) Heavy-tailed distribution and local memory in time series of molecular motion of the cell membrane; 12) Non-linear transform based robust adaptive latency change estimated of evoked potentials; 13) Multi-fractional property analysis of human sleep encephalogram signals; 14) Conclusions. Appendix A: Mittag-Leffler function; Appendix B: Application of numerical inverse Laplace transform algorithm in fractional-order signal processing; Appendix C: Some useful WebPages; Appendix D: MATLAB codes of impulse response invariant discretization; References; Index. We must say that the book is a volume of an extraordinary scientific richness: the graphic presentation is excellent, the references are up-to-date with an adequate quotation, so it constitutes a valuable tool for the beginners as well as for the practitioners in the domain. The fourth part provides a very interesting set of applications. A very good ratio between the theory and the given numerical examples is achieved. Also we underline that the analog as well as the discrete situation is taken into account. A collection of very useful MATLAB codes is gives together with a useful list of Web addresses. Finally, we think that the present volume will soon become a reference book in the area of fractional signal processing and systems.
