The authors prove that if \(\Gamma\) is a Zariski dense subsemigroup of a real Lie group \(G\) and \(\Lambda\) is a lattice of \(G\), then the \(\Gamma\)-invariant subsets of \(G/\Lambda\) are either finite or dense. In particular, the following conjecture of Furstenberg is proved: If \(\Gamma\) is a Zariski dense semisimple subgroup of a Lie group which acts by left translations on the quotient of \(G\) by a discrete subgroup with finite covolume and \(\mu\) is a probability measure on \(G\) whose support generates \(G\), then any \(\mu\)-stationary probability measure for such an action is \(G\)-invariant. Similar results are proved for the torus \({\mathbb T}^d\). The proofs of the main theorems are based on some studies on random motions on \(G/\Lambda\) (resp. \({\mathbb T}^d\)) induced by independent random motions on \(G\) (resp. on \(SL(d,\,\mathbb{Z})\)) determined by the measure \(\mu\). The paper consists of eight sections. In the first sections, the authors introduce the necessary tools for proving the main results. Among others, they discuss the construction and the properties of dynamical systems associated with a random motion and study the stationary probabilities on \(G/\Lambda\) or \({\mathbb T}^d\).
