The systematic investigation of the separable complementation property (SCP) in spaces \(C(K)\) of continuous functions on a compact line \(K\) was started by \textit{W.~Kubiś} [Topology Appl., 154, 749--757 (2007; Zbl 1119.46008)]. Results of the paper under review have rather final character in this direction. One of main results (Theorem 1.6): Let \(K\) be a compact line. The following properties are equivalent. (a) \(C(K)\) has the regular controlled SCP. (b) \(C(K)\) has the controlled SCP. (c) \(C(K)\) has the SCP. (d) \(K\) is \(\aleph_0\)-monolithic. A Banach space \(E\) has the SCP if for every countable set \(S\subset E\) there exists a projection \(P\) on \(E\) such that \(S\subset \mathrm{im}\) and \(\mathrm{im}\,P\) is separable. A Banach space \(E\) has the controlled SCP if for every countable sets \(S\subset E\) and \(T\subset E^*\) there exists a projection \(P\) on \(E\) such that \(S\subset\mathrm{im}\,P\), \(T\subset\mathrm{im}\,P^*\) and \(\mathrm{im}\,P\) is separable. A Banach space \(C(K)\) has the regular controlled SCP if it has the controlled SCP and the corresponding projections \(P\) are regular, i.e., \(P1=1\) and \(Px\geq 0\) whenever \(x\geq 0\). A compact space \(K\) is \(\aleph_0\)-monolithic if each separable subset is metrizable. For scattered compact spaces, the corresponding result is more exact. In the proofs, a characterization of order preserving continuous surjections between compact linearly ordered spaces which admit an averaging operator is used.
