A compact CR solvmanifold (CRS) is a triple \((\Gamma, G_o, G )\) formed by a simply connected solvable complex Lie group \(G\), a real connected subgroup \(G_o \subset G\) such that \(\mathfrak g = \mathfrak g_o + i \mathfrak g_o\) (here \(\mathfrak g_o = \text{Lie}(G_o)\) and \(\mathfrak g = \text{Lie}(G)\)) and a discrete co-compact subgroup \(\Gamma \subset G_o\). Any triple of this kind corresponds to a unique invariant CR structure on the compact manifold \(Y = G_o/\Gamma\) and an equivariant CR embedding \(\imath: Y \longrightarrow X = G/\Gamma_o\) into the complex manifold \(X = G/\Gamma_o\). A CRS \((\Gamma, G_o, G )\) is called locally Kähler if \(Y\) is (locally) CR embeddable in a Kähler manifold. This condition is equivalent to assume that \(Y\) admits a \(G_o\)-invariant open Kähler neighborhood in \(X\). The authors determine a set of necessary and sufficient conditions on \(\mathfrak g_o\) and \(\mathfrak g\) for the CRS \((\Gamma, G_o, G )\) to be locally Kähler. With this criterion they are able to give examples of CRS that are not locally Kähler and of CRS that are locally Kähler but not Kähler (i.e. with \(X\) not admitting a globally defined Kähler metric). They also determine the explicit classification of locally Kähler CRS of CR codimension one and two. Since a complex manifold which includes a not locally Kähler CRS cannot be Kähler, this result gives a new interesting criterion for non-Kählerianity.
