A new approach to large deformation plasticity is proposed by using a new internal variable formulation of rate-independent generalized plasticity. The decomposition of kinematic quantities into elastic and plastic is not assumed. The transition to classical plasticity is demonstrated employing the invariance of a set under the action of the flow of a vector field. The covariant balance of energy is used for the derivation of the mechanical state equation without the Dayle-Ericksen formula. To illustrate the application of the theory, the authors consider examples of both isotropic and kinematic hardening.
