Let \(C[a,b]\) be the space of continuous functions on the interval \([a,b]\) endowed with the uniform norm \(\left\| \;\right\| ,\) and \(Q\) an arbitrary class in \(C[a,b].\) The value of the best approximation of a function \(f\in C[a,b]\) by elements in \(Q\) is \(E(f;Q)=\inf\left\{ \left\| f-q\right\| :q\in Q.\right\} \) Denote by \(\omega_{r}(f,h)\) the classical modulus of continuity of order \(r\) of the function \(f.\) For \(f\in C[0,2\pi]\) and \(Q=T^{n}\) the set of trigonometric polynomials of degree at most \(n,\) an inequality of the form \(E(f,T^{n})\leq K_{r}\omega_{r}(f,\frac{1}{n+1}),\) \(n\geq1\) (where \(K_{r}>0\) is a constant independent of \(f\) and \(n\)) is called a Jackson-Stechkin inequality. The author obtains the Jackson-Stechkin inequality with a sharp constant for \(f\in C[a,b]\), \(Q=P^{n}\) the class of algebraic polynomials of degree \(\leq n\) and \(\omega_{2},\) namely: \(E(f,P^{n})\leq5\omega_{2}(f,\frac{\pi}{\sqrt{8}}\frac{b-a}{2}\frac{1}{n+1})\).
