Consider the following classical theorem of Wiener: A~closed subspace \(L\) of \(L^2((-\pi, \pi], \lambda)\) is doubly invariant under the operators of multiplication by \(e^{i \cdot}\) if and only if there exists a Borel subset \(\Delta\) of \((-\pi, \pi]\) such that its indicator function \(1_{\Delta}\) satisfies \(L = 1_{\Delta}L^2((-\pi, \pi], \lambda)\). The authors generalize this theorem from \(L^2((-\pi, \pi], \lambda)\) in several directions: The interval \((-\pi, \pi]\) is replaced by a locally compact abelian group; they consider invariance under multiplication by any continuous character. The Hilbert space \(L^2\) is replaced by \( L^{\alpha}, \;\alpha \in (0,\infty)\). The functions may take values in \(S_{\phi}^{(0)}({\mathcal H},{\mathcal K}),\) a norm ideal of compact operators from the Hilbert space \({\mathcal H}\) to the Hilbert space \({\mathcal K} \) of particular type; examples include the Schatten classes. Lebesgue measure is replaced by \(N d\nu\), where \(\nu\) is a regular Borel measure on the group and the density \(N\) a measurable function with values in the bounded nonnegative self-adjoint operators on \({\mathcal H}\). Furthermore, either \(\nu\) is \(\sigma\)-finite or \({\mathcal H}\) is finite-dimensional. A certain maximal orthoprojector-valued function is shown to take the role of the indicator function \(1_{\Delta}\).
