There is a canonical correspondence between the class of Schur functions \(\theta\) in the unit disk \(\mathbb D\) and the class of probability measures \(\mu\) on the unit circle \(\mathbb T\), given by \[ \frac{1+z\theta(z)}{1-z\theta(z)}=\int_{\mathbb T} \frac{t+z}{t-z}\,\mu(dt), \quad z\in \mathbb D. \] The following criterion of pseudocontinuability of \(\theta\) is one of the main result of the paper. A non-inner Schur function \(\theta\) is pseudocontinuable if and only if \(\mu\) belongs to the Szegő class and the Szegő function is pseudocontinuable. The connection between this criterion and another one based on a completely non-unitary contraction having \(\theta\) as the characteristic function is established. The authors rewrite both criteria in terms of orthogonal polynomials on \(\mathbb T\) with respect to \(\mu\).
