Let \(G\)~be a locally compact group and \(1\leq p<\infty\). \textit{V.~Runde} introduced [Stud.\ Math.~155, No.~2, 153--170 (2003; Zbl 1032.47048)] the following operator space analogue of the Figà-Talamanca--Herz algebras: the operator space projective tensor product \(L_p(G)\mathbin{\widehat\otimes}L_{p^*}(G)\) of a noncommutative \(L_p\)-space with its dual, both endowed with \textit{G.~Pisier}'s operator space structure [Non-commutative vector valued \(L_p\)-spaces and completely \(p\)-summing maps. Astérisque 247. Paris: Société Mathématique de France (1998; Zbl 0937.46056)], has as operator space dual the space~\(CB(L_p(G))\) of completely bounded operators on~\(L_p(G)\), which contains the image~\(\lambda_p(M(G))\) of measures on~\(G\) by the left regular representation on~\(L_p(G)\); then the analogue is defined as the quotient space of \(L_p(G)\mathbin{\widehat\otimes}L_{p^*}(G)\) produced by restricting its elements, viewed as functionals on~\(CB(L_p(G))\), to~\(\lambda_p(M(G))\). The author defines the corresponding object for the category of Schur multipliers on Schatten classes~\(S_p\): the operator space projective tensor product \(S_p\mathbin{\widehat\otimes}S_{p^*}\) of~\(S_p\) with its dual, both endowed with their canonical operator space structure, has~\(CB(S_p)\) as operator space dual, which contains the space \({\mathfrak M}_{p,cb}\) of completely bounded Schur multipliers as weak*-closed subspace; then the analogue is defined as the quotient space \(S_p\mathbin{\widehat\otimes}S_{p^*}/({\mathfrak M}_{p,cb})_\perp\), but its elements are viewed concretely as elements of~\(S_1\) through the map \(\psi_p: S_p\mathbin{\widehat\otimes}S_{p^*}\to S_1\), \(A\otimes B\mapsto A*B\), where \(*\)~is Schur multiplication, whose kernel is precisely \(({\mathfrak M}_{p,cb})_\perp\): the resulting operator space is denoted \(\mathfrak R_{p,cb}\) and is by definition a predual of~\({\mathfrak M}_{p,cb}\). The main result of this article is that \(\mathfrak R_{p,cb}\)~ is a completely contractive Banach algebra for matrix multiplication as well as for Schur multiplication; the proof follows Runde's lines. The last section of the article provides an analogue to a theorem of \textit{S. K.~Parrott} on Fourier multipliers [Pac.\ J.\ Math.~25, 159--166 (1968; Zbl 0159.42301)] by characterising the isometric Schur multipliers on \(S_p\), \(p\neq2\), as the elementary ones, i.e., as given by a matrix \([a_ib_j]\) with the \(a_i\) and \(b_j\) complex numbers of modulus~1; these operators turn out to span the whole~\({\mathfrak M}_{p,cb}\) in the weak* topology.
