Let \(H\) be a group and let \(L\) be an \(n\)-dimensional integral lattice. For the second page of the Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence associated to the extension \[ 0\to L \to L\rtimes H\to H\to 0, \] \textit{L. Charlap} and \textit{A. T. Vasquez} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 137, 533--549 (1969; Zbl 0192.34301)] defined characteristic classes and showed that these classes can be seen as obstructions for vanishing of differentials on the second page of the spectral sequence. The authors of this paper under review generalizes this theory to split short exact sequences of Hopf algebras. They use Hopf algebra instead of general algebras because of the existence of cup product on cohomology which is vital to this theory. Thus this paper relies heavily on the paper of \textit{R. K. Molnar} [J. Algebra 47, 29--51 (1977; Zbl 0353.16004)].
