The main result is that, being subject to an external periodic force of high frequency, the extensible beam equation in Ball's model admits periodic solutions near equilibrium states. To prove the result, the author first puts the problem in an abstract framework of evolution equations and proves the compactness of the semigroup generated by the equation. Then he makes use of the averaging method. Other key ingredients are the topological degree and the fixed point index.
