On the generic and typical ranks of 3-tensors (Q649550)

This paper is devoted to the study of various ranks (``generic'', ``typical'' -- understood in the algebro-geometric sense) of \(3\)-tensors, i.e. elements of the tensor product of \(3\) vector spaces. The tools come from an elementary algebraic geometry, while the results are important in applied and numerical analysis, and the paper serves to bridge the gap between communities. In particular, it contains an appendix about basic notions of real and complex algebraic geometry used in the paper. The paper is very technical, but the exposition is nice and clear. A number of conjectures and open questions is presented.
